On March 6 and 7, 2019, the seminar “Desalination in Latin America” was held in Santiago de Chile, sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism of Chile. AAGES participated as a Silver Sponsor, represented by its Director of Water Projects, Mr. César Bueno.
The event has constituted an international platform for dialogue, exchange of experiences and consolidation of efforts between governments and private industry. In addition, the conference has aimed to promote the application of best practices and latest technologies for the desalination industry.
AAGES, as a leading company in the promotion and financing of water projects at an international level, is actively following the evolution of desalination projects in Latin America and especially in Chile.
The Director General of Water of the Ministry of Public Works Mr. Oscar Cristi declared that Chile’s water stress condition provides an opportunity for the mining sector, since most of the mining operations in Chile are in an arid climate and due to the recent prohibition of the use of new inland water sources, desalination is consolidated as the only viable option for mining. In that scenario, he said, projections indicate that by 2030 there will be an expected 230% growth in seawater consumption in mining activity.
Chile is today one of the most active markets in global desalination, followed by Peru and Mexico where new projects are being activated. Currently, there are 22 projects for desalination plants in Chile at different stages of development.
